Silas' Story
Instinctively, Silas is a gutsy, fiercely loyal, quick-to-act, and inquisitive Aasimar who craves the approval of a group. While these qualities served him well during his early life in the streets as a homeless orphan, his mentor in the monastery encouraged him to reign in his hasty & prying nature.
Growing up in a rough neighborhood, his mind was mostly occupied with putting out the next fire in his life - gathering food by picking through garbage bins of extravagant/lavish houses, or trying to piece together shelter from rain using scrap materials, or fighting off other desperate homeless trying to steal from him.
His friends (Dusty, Red & Slim) gave him the name “Sparky” because his eyes would occasionally light up in a fight. Their (Dusty, Red & Slim’s) idea of education was learning to pick locks, but Silas never was able to pick any of these skills up. He did a better job of casing a place and keeping watch while the other 3 broke in and stole supplies to survive on
While this life was ridden with danger, nerve-racking adventure, he had learned to cherish the moments of temporary respite when he & his friends would enjoy the fruit of their labor (sharing fancy dessert, sleeping rough in vacation houses while the wealthy weren't using them, share a sick friend’s discomfort by chugging cough medicine/health potion together). Their approval of his heroics mattered more than the act being morally right or wrong.
Silas (8) and his friends (Dusty (12), Red (14) & Slim (11)) got caught while trying to steal food from the monastery. While most monks wanted to turn in the kids to the authorities, Amos, one of the elder monks, convinced them to take the wayward children in and mold them into upstanding citizens. Monks/Disciples/Amos called him by his actual name, Silas.
Amos attempted to appeal to Silas’s inquisitive nature by teaching him new tools to use. He figured “An empty mind is the devil's workshop” and perhaps it was best to keep him occupied with tasks in/around the Monastery. He hoped that the company of disciples who volunteered to be at the Monastery would sway him into accepting them as Family instead. Hoping that Silas would look for their approval/admiration. It did. For a few years.
Silas’s gratitude towards his mentor could only contain him for so long. He had developed all these skills he never had as a kid but no high-stake adventure to put them into practice.
Silas hadn't expected it over the next 10 years, but Dusty and Slim took to the monk life well and ultimately decided to take the vows when the time came, dedicating their lives to the monastery. Red was always a bit of a wild card, and after a few years he bid the crew farewell saying he was "going out west to find his fortune," and "He'd remember you all when he was rich and buy you all houses."
Silas, the youngest of this little bunch, had the choice - join the monastery officially, or make his way in the world. So Silas decided he'd head out west, maybe he'd find Red, maybe not, but either way, he'd certainly find adventure!
